October 1954 Upon taking back control of the Capital, the physical infrastructure of the power sector in the North was composed of 5 power plants with a total capacity not exceeding 31.5 MW and the total power output of about 53 million kWh/year.

December 21, 1954 Uncle Ho Yen paid a visit to Yen Phu Power Plant and Bo Ho Lighting Factory. In this friendly meeting, Uncle Ho said: "This Power Plant now belongs to the people, and the Government. It is yours. In role of owners, you should preserve and further develop it…” Since that day, December 21 is marked as the Traditional Day of the Vietnam Power Sector .   

July 21, 1955  The Department of Power (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade) was established  according to Decision No. 169-BCT/ND/KB of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (signed by Vice Minister Dang Viet Chau). This was highlighted as a critical legal milestone for governance activities of State management bodies specialized and responsible for electric power areas.

Feb 21, 1961 The Department of Power was transformed into the General Department of Power according to Decision No. 86-TLĐL/QD of the Ministry of Irrigation and Power.

December 28, 1962 The Council of Government  decided to relocate the General Department of Power from the Ministry of Irrigation and Power to the Ministry of Heavy Industry. It then took back the initial name as Department of Power.

October 6, 1969 A Power Company was established (later changed to Power Company No. 1) under the Ministry of Power and Coal according to Decision No. 106/QD/TC of the Ministry of Power and Coal, undertaking the duty of electricity delivery and operating with an independent accounting scheme.  

October 7, 1975 Central Power Company was established (later changed to Power Company No. 3). Power Company No. 3 is currently a multi-industry company under Vietnam Electricity (EVN), with electricity delivery as the core business, operating in 13 provinces and cities in the Central Region and the Central Highlands of Vietnam.

August 7, 1976 The General Department of Power (established just after the Liberation Day) was renamed as Southern Power Company under Decision No. 1592/QD-TCCB.3 by the Minister of Power and Coal.

May 9, 1981 The Southern Power Company was renamed as Power Company No. 2 according to Decision No. 15/TTCBB.3 by the Minister of Power. On April 7, 1993, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 147-TTg to incorporatePower Company No. 2 in the Ministry of Energy. From April 1, 1995, the Power Company No. 2 was re-established under the Electricity of Vietnam   (currently known as Vietnam Electricity).

1981 Ministry of Power came into being. 

April 11, 1994  National Load Dispatch Center (A0) was established according to Decision No. 180/NL/TCCB-LD by the Minister of Energy, undertaking the mission of securing the safe, uninterrupted and reliable operation of the national power system.  

January 1, 1995 Electricity of Vietnam  (EVN) officially came into being, undertaking electricity delivery business across the country.

December 3, 2004 at the 6th session of the 11th National Assembly passed the Electricity Law and officially came into effect from July 1, 2005. The introduction of the Electricity Law has created a legal corridor for electricity activities, enhanced transparency and equity for all parties involved in electricity activities.

October 8, 2007 the Party Committee of the Central Business Sector issued Decision No. 299 QD/DUK on the establishment of the Party Committee of the Mother holding company - Vietnam Electricity, named the Party Committee of Vietnam Electricity.

December 31, 2007 Electric Power Trading Company (EPTC) was founded   according to Decision No. 1182/QÐ-EVN-HÐQT of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Electricity.

July 4, 2008 National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) was established in the model of a single member limited liability company, 100% owned by the EVN, consisting of four Power Transmission Companies No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and three Northern, Central, and Southern Power Project Management Boards.  EVNNPT is responsible for investment, operation and management of the power transmission systems from 220 kV to 500 kV in the whole country.

April 2010 Power Companies No. 1, 2, 3, Hanoi Power Company, and Ho Chi Minh City Power Company were transformed into five Power Corporations: Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC); Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC);  Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC ); Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI ); Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC).

June 25, 2010 The Mother Holding Company - Vietnam Electricity was transformed into a State Owned Single Member Limited Liability Company according to Decision No. 975/QĐ-TTg of the Prime Minister.

February 3, 2012 The Prime Minister approved establishment of three Power Generation Corporations under Vietnam Electricity to perform the power sector restructuring roadmap and promote the formation of Vietnam Competitive Generation Market.

June 1, 2012 The Minister of Industry and Trade decided to establish Power Generation Corporations  (GENCO 1, 2, 3) under EVN, operating in the model of mother - daughter company. The Power Generation Corporations (GENCO 1, 2, 3) have been officially launched and become operational since January 1, 2013.

March 18, 2016 The Prime Minister issued Decision No. 428/QD-TTg on approving the adjustment of the National electricity development planning for the 2011-2020 period, with a vision to 2030 (Adjusted Power Master Plan VII).

June 14, 2017 The Prime Minister issued Decision No. 852/QD-TTg on approving the overall project of reorganizing and restructuring enterprises under EVN for the period of 2017-2020 (called for short as Decision 852).

July 25, 2020 Deploying construction and launching emulation on completing the construction of coal import ports and breakwaters of the Infrastructure Project of Quang Trach Power Center.

October 5, 2020 EVN was selected as one of the 30 enterprises to be honored at the Typical Taxpayer Honoring Ceremony during 30 years of companion and development with the country's taxation sector (1990-2020 period). By 2020, EVN paid about VND 183,152 billion to the state budget.

December 21, 2020 Receiving the title of Labour Hero in the Renovation Period

Year 2020 Deploying 02 times of electricity price reduction and electricity cost reduction for customers. The total value is expected to be more than VND 12,300 billion in both phases, the total reduction time was up to 6 months.

Period 2010 - 2020

* Electricity business and services:

- Power supply to 100% of communes and 99.54% of households nationwide, of which the number of rural power-supplied households reached 99.3%. In addition, EVN has supplied power and sold power directly to 11/12 island districts nationwide.

- Commercial electricity output has grown from 85.4 billion kWh to about 216 billion kWh. The average growth rate of commercial electricity is about 9.72%/year. The quality of power, power supply service has also improved dramatically.

- Customer satisfaction score for EVN constantly increased, from 6.45 points in 2013 to 8.3 points in 2019.

As the first state-owned enterprise to deploy electronic invoices since 2012, up to now, 100% of electricity services have been provided at level 4 and transacted by electronic methods. Electricity services have been provided online at the National Public Service Portal, public administrative centers, online public service portals of 63 provinces/cities nationwide, implementing the one-stop-shop mechanism between the Electricity sector with Departments, Branches and Agencies in many localities.

* Investment in resources and grid

- Total investment capital reached more than 1 million billion, about 3.5 times higher than that of the 2001-2010 period.

- Putting into operation 21 power projects with a total capacity of 17,120MW.

- Energizing 1,936 projects from 110kV - 500kV rate with 8,290km of lines, total capacity of 26,123MVA substations, increase transmission capacity of the system. In which, there are important projects such as: Pleiku - My Phuoc - Cau Bong 500kV transmission line; projects of 500kV grid connecting/releasing power sources, etc.

- Focusing on developing renewable energy, supporting investors to release capacity for connecting to solar power, wind power, etc., to the power system.

- The total power capacity of the whole system is about 69,300 MW, ranking 2nd in Southeast Asia and 23rd in the world. In which, the total capacity of renewable energy sources was 17,430 MW, accounting for 25.2%.

* Electricity market

- Successfully deploying and operating the competitive power generation market. At the same time, the Group has been effectively operating the competitive wholesale market complying with regulations.

* Science and technology

- Putting into operation 63 control centers and carrying out remote control for 710/854 unmanned 220kV and 110kV substations.

- Digitalizing over 90% of operations related to main production and business activities.

- In 2019 and 2020, EVN was honored as an excellent enterprise of digital conversion.

* Social Security

- Contributing and supporting works and performing many social security activities with a total value of up to thousands of billion Vietnamese Dong. In which, there were many special meaningful programs, such as: caring for Vietnamese heroic mothers; supporting families of policy; supporting hunger eradication and poverty reduction, supporting people in flooded areas after natural disasters.

- Collecting 10,000 blood units and transferring to the Central Institute of Hematology and Transfusion at EVN's Red Week every year.

- 100% of power plant projects and works of EVN in operation have been confirmed to be fully completed and ensured in the environmental protection before being put into operation.

- 10 years of accompanying and sponsoring the program "Earth Hour", realizing commitments to environmental protection and climate change prevention.

5-year plan: 2016 - 2020

- The rate of power loss in 2020 was reduced to 6.42%.

- SAIDI power supply reliability reached 346.12 minutes.

- Labour productivity by 2020 reached 2.52 million kWh/person.

- Access-to-electricity index ranked 27/190 countries in the world.
