Strengthening cooperation between EVN and Marubeni in energy sector

On the morning of October 2nd in Hanoi, Mr. Nguyen Tai Anh, Vice President of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), hosted a meeting with Mr. Koji Kuroda, Executive Director of Power Development from Japan's Marubeni Corporation, along with a working delegation, to discuss the ongoing cooperation between the two parties in the energy sector.
Also in attendance was Mr. Go Suzuki, CEO of HSE Tech. Sec, Marubeni Corporation (participating online from Japan), and Mr. Yudai Kato, Chairman and CEO of Marubeni Asian Power Vietnam.
During the discussions, Mr. Koji Kuroda acknowledged the successful and positive collaboration between Marubeni Corporation and EVN over the years. Marubeni Corporation highly appreciates EVN’s close and effective cooperation in implementing the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in November 2022. As part of this cooperation, both parties have established working groups that regularly exchange information and work on initiatives related to renewable energy development, new energy research, the application of new technologies, and exploring carbon emission reduction solutions for coal-fired power plants.

Given the long-term goal of reducing emissions and fostering future cooperation, Marubeni Corporation proposed that EVN consider extending the MoU to further research, discuss, and identify projects and solutions in line with Vietnam’s Net Zero goal by 2050.
Marubeni's leadership also shared their experience in offshore wind power projects and expressed a strong desire to collaborate with EVN on renewable energy projects, particularly offshore wind power in Vietnam.
On behalf of EVN, Vice President Nguyen Tai Anh expressed his appreciation for the positive relationship between EVN and Marubeni. He emphasized that EVN is actively working on energy transition projects and green energy development, and thus welcomes the support and shared experience of reputable international partners like Marubeni Corporation.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on various topics, including the energy transition roadmap, challenges facing Vietnam’s power sector, and key priorities for future cooperation.
Based on the signed MoU and the discussions, EVN and Marubeni will coordinate to develop an action plan to implement specific cooperation areas. These include researching carbon capture technology for EVN’s existing coal-fired power plants, developing renewable energy projects, pursuing new energy projects like biomass and hydrogen, and sharing international knowledge and experience in electricity market operations, etc.
